Theater

Saenger Theatre
Originally built as a large movie house in the 1920s, the Saenger Theatre was renovated in the late 1970s to transform it into a performing arts center. The 2736 seat venue plays host to a variety of different performances, including Broadway musicals, popular vocal artists, comedians, and other acts. An official historic landmark, the ornate building is considered an attraction in and of itself.
143 North Rampart Street • Tel 504.524.2490

True Brew Theatre
This coffeehouse/theater is home to a variety of locally produced plays and other performances.  You probably won’t see a Broadway musical here, but you will see hip comedy and satire with a Big Easy flavor. The seating is often packed so it’s a good idea to call ahead and show up early.
200 Julia Street • Tel 504.524.8440

Mahalia Jackson Theatre
This performing arts venue plays host to the New Orleans Opera, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and a number of visiting dance and theater groups.  It’s also a preferred venue for large charity and formal events, that coincide with Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans.
801 South Rampart Street • Tel 504.565.7462

New Orleans Orpheum Theater
Home of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orpheum Theater was originally built for vaudeville performances.  The 1780 seat facility is fairly unique in its design with twin balconies.  The stacked design keeps much of the audience close to the stage and makes it an intimate venue for its capacity.  The theater also hosts a variety of other entertainment, conventions, and private functions so it’s wise to check the calendar and call ahead.
129 University Place • Tel 504.524.3285

Southern Repertory Theatre
Productions featuring themes on Southern life are performed at the 150 seat theater. The theater also plays hosts to small festivals and other productions. The theater generally features young local actors and directors, and most original productions are written by local artists as well.
